Engineering Society of Systems Scholars

The Engineering Society of Systems Scholars (ESSyS) was established in 2025 to coordinate and strengthen the systems scholarly community. It continues efforts of its predecessor, the Council of Engineering Systems Universities (CESUN), which was founded in 2004.

ESSyS serves three core identities. Engineering is a discipline for problem solvers, designers, builders, and inventors. Systems problems reflect interconnected, complex, emergent, and socio-technical factors. Scholars create and disseminate artifacts that reflect expertise.

Key Focus Areas

The intersection of engineering and systems represents an interdisciplinary field of study that encompasses activities in several inter-related disciplines:
Systems Engineering
Technology and Policy
Engineering Management, Innovation, Entrepreneurship
System and Decision Analysis, Operations Research
Manufacturing, Product Development, Industrial Engineering

Statement of Purpose

ESSyS provides a forum for member scholars to share knowledge to advance engineering education, research, and practice. ESSyS explicitly recognizes that addressing the great challenges posed by large-scale, interconnected, and therefore highly complex and dynamic, socio-technical systems requires a holistic perspective. Systems perspectives provide a broadened scope compared to traditional engineering. Context matters. The lifecycle is key. Technology and people are of equal concern. The models and frameworks are both qualitative and quantitative. The opportunity for exchange at ESSyS advances engineering ability to continue to meet human needs by helping solve the great challenges of today and tomorrow.
